No Fragile, “Cobbled” Solution Need Apply

Strong APM solutions meet a business’s needs at its current level of IT maturity

The number of vendors vying for the application performance management space has exploded in the last year. Almost every vendor in the space comes to it from a specific strength and has expanded its core offering to provide some level of application performance management (APM).

What differentiates a strong APM solution from one that is a fragile, cobbled solution?

  • Strong APM solutions are built to integrate into complex application environments. It won’t require you to replace your existing application monitoring tools. It will leverage them.
  • Fragile APM solutions aren’t scalable or flexible because their architectures are not elastic and can’t transparently grow as demand increases. Often the complex event processing engine, if available, is an add-on not a core component and thus requires lots of maintenance.
  • Strong APM solutions meet a business’s needs at its current level of IT maturity whether that be mainframe oriented or evolving toward private, virtual private or even public cloud.
  • Fragile APM solutions tend to be labor intensive, requiring IT managers to manage their application management tools rather than freeing those IT managers to do more important business growing activities.
  • Strong APM solutions are quick to deploy and deliver value immediately. They offer integrated dashboards and views that provide all the essential information to manage applications across the entire application stack.
  • Fragile APM solutions aren’t powerful enough to be proactive. They don’t automate processes that prevent cascading application failures. They don’t “learn” from previous abnormal transaction behaviors.

There are some application performance monitoring vendors who are delivering strong APM solutions within the marketplace. And there are some that aren’t.

Age in the industry isn’t the only consideration, but it can be an important one. Has the vendor proven it can deliver application performance management in the past? Is its APM solution cloud ready? When you find an APM solution that demonstrates these strengths as well as those mentioned earlier, then you just may be able to say, “This is no fragile, cobbled solution.”
